About Susan Percival

I am a self taught artist who started out painting portraits of my family members. I soon ran out of new subjects until a friend asked if I would consider creating a portrait of her dogs.

After that first portrait, I was hooked.
Having always been an “animal person” I was excited that I had found a way to be creative, meet great new people with their pets and provide everlasting mementos for people who love their furry friends.

After 15 years there are well over 150 of my portraits gracing the walls of family homes from New Brunswick, Canada to Tasmania, Australia.

SUSAN PERCIVAL INSPIRATION

Describe your creative process and how you go about starting and completing a finished piece.

Typically, I work from photographs. I prefer to meet the animal and take several dozen photos from which the customer can choose their favourite. Meeting them both adds a level of intimacy in the portrait by capturing their shared relationship.

What are you most inspired by and how is this reflected in your work?

Sharing a love of animals inspires me to capture the personality of the animal and their relationship to their owner. If the portrait makes an owner cry, I know I have done my job well.

What are your artistic goals and how does your work contribute to your community?

I always strive to improve my skills and learn new techniques. Making portraits available at a reasonable cost to the "dog community", which is made up of the best people, provides lasting mementos for that family.
